Strawberries Help Prevent Harm from Alcohol

Not to encourage the drinking of alcohol, especially beyond moderation, but an article in a Connecticut blog in December 2011 told about a study out of Europe that came up with some helpful advice that may help those who do drink as well as everyone else.

Apparently, strawberries contain some great antioxidants and a high content of phenolic compounds (anthocyans) and they also are able to activate the antioxidant defenses and the enzymes inside of the body. What does this mean, exactly? It means that if you eat strawberries, it will reduce the harm that alcohol can cause to the stomach’s mucous membranes, making it less likely that you will develop, or annoy stomach ulcers.

There was a team of Italian, Serbian and Spanish researchers who gave one group of rats some strawberry extract first before giving the ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and did not give the strawberry extract to the second group. Those who had the extract suffered less damage. The point of the study was not to help people manage their drunkenness, but rather to find new possibilities that could lead to better stomach medications – they may have found something great existing in the lovely strawberry.

The consumption of alcohol is one source that will lead to gastritis or inflammation of the stomach’s mucous membrane. Other sources are aspirin and certain other medications and viral infections. In any of these cases, this research suggests that eating a lot of strawberries will help to prevent the gastric illnesses.

It’s another example of how natural healthy foods are just better for people than man-made products are. Overall, most alcoholic beverages are a conglomeration of processes and items, and not natural, although wine and hard cider and a few other alcoholic beverages may be considered a natural product.

Strawberries are known for their vitamins and low calories as well and their exceptionally great taste. Perhaps if people give a stronger consideration to the joy of strawberries they may even find that they can be pleased and enjoy life without having to have their senses altered by liquor.

If not, then at least they can try to protect their stomach lining a bit.
